“My ring finger turns black under my ring”

This is normally a reaction between your body and the alloys in the metal. We normally will see this in gold products lower than 18 karat, and silver products. It is not an allergic reaction.

This can show up suddenly as the result of high body acid (mostly related to dieting and eating a lot of fruit), excess vitamin B, and is also a reaction to some medications or combinations of medications.

The “black” will wash off and most of the time will disappear as your body adapts to the change.

A good cleaning and polishing of the inside of the ring will temporarily alleviate the problem as well.

We’ve observed two different 14 karat products (58.5% gold/41.5% copper, silver or other metals) with different alloy proportions. One will turn the finger black the other will not.
